After almost three months away in Europe, it’s time for me to go home! However, before arriving to the airport I must complete the impossible: fit everything into my suitcase and carry-on without going over the weight limit or leaving anything behind. After traveling to Poland so many times, I take it as fact that I will end up will a lot more things than I came with; luckily, over the years I have grown smarter and have a couple of tricks to not end up overweight at the end of my trip!
- Fit my carry-on duffel bag into my suitcase. – When packing for Poland, I made sure to pack all my things (including my carry-on duffel) into one suitcase. That way, I had an entire carry-on to pack full of things that I collected from my travels.
- Took travel-sized products or products that are running out. – I packed travel-size products, or products that were nearly finished, so that I could throw them away at the end of my trip. For example, I took my D&G Little Blue perfume bottle that was almost finished with me to Poland – I ended up using the last of it and throwing it out while in Poland. Likewise, I took lotion, toothpaste, deodorant, and a razor, all things I could throw away later.
- Didn’t overpack clothing. – It’s easy to over-pack and take more clothes than you need (because of course you need that shirt.. and that one.. and THAT ONE). But I keep in mind that I’ll probably end up buying clothes and really narrow it down to basic pieces with a few stand-out pieces.
- Packed lots of gifts. – By purchasing a lot of gifts for my family in Poland, I ensured that there was room for other things to take back home, it’s a win-win situation!
Packing: Packing definitely looked hopeless in the beginning, but after two hours of consistent self motivation, I managed to pack all my things into my suitcase as well as my carry-on…. with the exception of a jar of delicious Polish honey :(. On the upside, I did manage to pack two jars into my suitcase, so there’s not a complete loss. Also, all bags were packed to max capacity (obviously), but as long as they made it onto the airplane, I was totally okay with it.
A Happy Ending: Luckily, all things and I reached Jersey safely, without any airplane mishaps :). Even though my suitcase weighted 25kg… a little more than the 23kg limit, my bag was accepted without any additional costs.
